David L. Beattie was born in Regina in April 1946. He attended the University of Saskatchewan, Regina Campus obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics in 1967, a Bachelor Degree (Hons.) in 1968, and a Masters Degree in 1970. David received his Doctoral degree from Queen’s University in 1976.
Beattie was a member of the both the Canadian and the American Economics Associations, the International Association of Students of Economics and Commerce (AIESEC) at the University of Regina Branch (serving as Director for 1978-78), and a member of the Canadian Foundation for Economic Education and the Canadian Tax Foundation. David worked as a research assistant on the Royal Commission on Farm Machinery in 1968 and in 1972 began teaching as an assistant in the Department of Economics at Queen’s University. He returned to Regina as a special lecturer at the University of Saskatchewan, Regina Campus from 1973 to 1975, as assistant professor from 1975 to 1978, was Head of the Department of Economics at the University of Regina from 1977 until 1981 and was a consultant for the Department of Finance, Government of Saskatchewan from 1974 to 1975.
In 1991 Beattie was awarded the University of Regina Alumni Association Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award, an award recognizing his 25 years of teaching and encouragement of students.
Beattie died suddenly on November 1, 1999, and a memorial scholarship in his name is awarded each spring to an undergraduate student who meets the criteria.
