History
Born in Birmingham and educated at Grove School in Tottenham, Shorthouse was a chemical manufacturer and novelist. His first book, John Inglesant, printed in 1881 became a success. The story was considered fascinating by its style, religious undertones and well-depicted scenes. Other novels by Shorthouse include The Little Schoolmaster Mark, Sir Percival, The Countess Eve, and A Teacher of the Violin, and an essay, The Platonism of Wordsworth. Shorthouse died in March 1903.
