History
Lurleen Anna Gish was born in Moosejaw, Saskatchewan in 1909 to parents Arthur George Gish and Ethel Irene (nee Misgen), her father worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway Company and after a brief time in Regina the family moved to Kronau where she attended elementary school. In 1924, at the age of 14, Lillian was presented a bronze medal for obtaining the highest marks in grade eight examinations for all rural schools districts in Saskatchewan, the medal was donated by his Excellency Lord Byng of Vimy then Governor General of Canada. Lurleen enjoyed music and took the train to Regina for piano lessons until she started grade 9, when she moved to the city to attend Regina College becoming active in drama and music and later attended Normal School.
After Normal School Lurleen taught at Hart, South Dakota near Coronach, Saskatchewan and at schools in Readlyn and Rabbit Lake. In 1934 she married Robert F. Lockwood and the couple farmed, and raised a family at Briarcrest. After the family was grown Lurleen resumed teaching and in 1961 the couple moved to Moose Jaw. Lurleen retired from teaching in 1974 and moved to back Regina.
Lurleen was a student at the Senior’s Education Centre, taking several classes in her retirement. Lurleen especially enjoyed music classes.
