Allgemeine Anmerkung
Description written on paper with photograph: "The Ideal Plant" is a tribute to Goethe's idea of the archetypal plant or urpflanze. In addition to representing the basic concept "plant" the sculpture also shows the ground out of which the organism grows. This tension of opposing terms is further reflected in the materials of the work themselves; the variously colored layers of raw, unglazed clay below the medial plane representing the ages of time past, the glazed sections above symbolizing the present and future. The column is built in sections which stack one on top of the other and so is capable, at least mentally, of infinite extension in both directions.
