Biographical history
Patrick Lane was born at Nelson, British Columbia on March 26, 1939 and attended high school in Vernon, British Columbia. He has written more than 20 books and is considered to be one of the foremost Canadian writers of his generation. He has held Writer-in-Residence positions across Canada and has published around the world.
Lane is associated with numerous professional writing associations and committees. He has received grants from the Canada Council, Ontario Arts Council, Manitoba Arts Council, Saskatchewan Arts Board and the British Columbia Arts Council. His poetry, fiction, and non-fiction have been translated widely and he has received many awards and prizes for them. Lane has been a critic and commentator appearing regularly on CBC and other numerous media.
Custodial history
These papers were in the care of Patrick Lane until being transferred to the Archives and Special Collections in 2012.
Scope and content
This collection is organized into various series, the major series are: Correspondence, Professional Activities – Teaching Retreats and Chapbooks and Writing by Patrick Lane. The collection also contains correspondence and drafts related to Lanes book The Collected Poems of Patrick Lane. Also contained within this collection are 4 Compact Disks, an 1 Audio Tape, 4 Oversize Items, 7 Photographs, 1 Photo-card and 1 Verbatim hard drive containing poems by Patrick Lane.
Preservation photocopying was required and carried out on a few newspaper clippings The photographs were numbered and sleeved; the compact disks and audio cassette tape were also numbered.

The Correspondence email remains largely in the order that it was received. The files from an external hard-drive have been copied to the K: Drive and remain on the external drive. Four times each year Lane holds four-day all-inclusive retreats for poets and writers on Vancouver Island. These papers contain correspondence with attendees of the retreats, and other correspondence of both a professional or personal nature. These correspondence are
arranged by year and month, generally in the order they were received. The Professional Activities – Teaching Retreats and Chapbooks. Each of the retreats culminated with a published “chapbook” of poetry written by the students of the workshop or retreat and edited by Patrick Lane. These chapbooks have been filed with their respective workshop where known.
