Biografie

Samuel (Sam) Edgar Stewart was born in Halifax in 1915 and attended Dalhousie University where he completed a Bachelors degree, and a Master of Arts degree before studying at the University of Toronto. After attending the University of Toronto he taught at Upper Canada College in Toronto and joined the faculty at Regina College in 1940 teaching the Classics (the study of languages, culture, history and thought of the ancient civilizations). He coached the Regina College Cougars men’s Basketball team from 1944 to 1961 and is credited with originating the Cougar nickname for the school’s sports teams in 1945. Stewart also coached community teams such as Regina Crescents and was captain of Army and Navy Veterans team winning the 1946 Saskatchewan senior men's championship. He became a central figure in Regina’s Basketball community and went on to coach the senior men's provincial team at the 1956 and 1960 Olympic Zone trials.

In 1964 Stewart was appointed assistant to the Dean of Arts and Science and in 1967 appointed Assistant Dean of Arts and Science although at various times in his career he was also President of the Regina Classical Club, a Referee-in-Chief for the Luther Invitational Tournaments (Basketball), a member of the Sub-Committee investigating the 5/3 System, Chair of the Appeals Committee, and Arts representative to the Search Committee for a Dean of Science. In 1981 Stewart retired from the University of Regina and passed away in 1983.
